Education | Health Care | Recreation Adrian is home to Adrian College a United Methodist supported school that was established in 1845. Today the college has an enrollment of approximately 950 students. Its campus lies at the west edge of Adrian and provides a highly rated liberal arts education to its students. Across town the Adrian Dominican Sisters established a boarding school for girls, St. Joseph's Academy in 1896. As the need arose to educate the many sisters needing a college education to teach in parochial schools the Dominicans expanded their mission and opened St. Joseph's College in 1919. Today the school with an enrollment of over 1100 students is known as Siena Heights University. In 2004 Jackson Community College expanded its programs in a new campus built next to the Lenawee Vocational School in Adrian. Courses are offered for adults and students and include preparation for a four year college education, computer training, flower arranging, carpentry, and childcare courses among others. There are a wide variety of quality education opportunities for children of all ages and those include Adrian Public Schools, Lenawee Christian Academy, St. Joseph's Academy and Montesorri and Lenawee Vocational School. Bixby Hospital and the Hickman Cancer Center are up to date facilities that offer first-rate health care and treatment centers in affiliation with the Pro-Medica Health system of Ohio. The YMCA of Adrian, Power House Gym, Lenawee Christian Center, and several other privately owned companies are available to the public for indoor fitness and recreation. Adrian abounds with beautiful city parks and fitness trails. The citys' Bohn Pool opens on Memorial Day to the public and you will find a supervised Skate Board park at Island Park while local soccer and softball teams compete on the well-kept fields at Heritage Park. While you are downtown shopping in the numerous gift and retail shops take time out to have a seat and enjoy the colorful flowers in one of Adrian's many downtown parks. Trestle Park in the heart of downtown has great walking trails and an outdoor band shell where on a warm summer evening you can enjoy songs played by the Adrian City Band. Lakes and golf courses dot the landscape. Lenawee Country Club offers a private country club atmosphere at an affordable price. Wolf Creek and Woodlawn Golf Courses are open to the public. In the Irish Hills you will find many lakes and parks including Devils Lake, Round Lake, Wamplers Lake. Clark Lake, Sand Lake and Evans Lake where fishing and water skiing will tempt even the most amateur boater. Adrian is filled with music, art and culture. The Adrian Symphony Orchestra makes its home at Adrian College and is a first class professional orchestra. Concerts are presented throughout the winter months at the college and at other venues throughout Lenawee County. The Lenawee Council for the Visual Arts maintains a gallery in downtown Adrian where you can view the art of area artists. They also sponsor art classes and children's summer art camps. Klemm Gallery at Siena Heights University, Stubnitz Gallery at Adrian College, the Croswell Art Gallery and Da Vinci's Art Gallery present student and local artist's works from painting to sculpture and beyond. In the center of downtown Michigan's oldest historic theater, the Croswell Opera House, functions as a semi-professional producer of plays and musicals. Live entertainment may be enjoyed throughout the year at the theater and professional actors from around the country often tread the boards on the Croswell stage beside local actors and students keeping alive the theater's true spirit of community involvement from the 1800s. |
